A is for Appreciation and forgiveness – the keys to joy and freedom

Education

Regularly practising appreciation and forgiveness really is a good way to access your headspace and make you feel great.

When we consciously or unconsciously hold a grudge we are pulled into past or future thoughts of what someone said /didn’t say, or did /didn’t do. These trigger related emotions and conceal our underlying headspace, that quiet, still part of your mind that doesn't judge, unlike the constant thought chatter

The key to forgiveness is that it actually has nothing to do with the other person – it doesn’t even matter if they don’t know you have forgiven them! We forgive them for our own sake, to be able to access headspace and a place of calm again.

Forgiveness is not about making the other person right or condoning their behaviour. It is about releasing yourself from any distress or discomfort the situation is causing you.

You'll be surprised how many little grudges and grievances we can hold onto on an average day, many of which we may not be consciously aware of but are contributing to our background feeling of negativity and annoyance.

Activity

Try the following

Appreciation:

To bring a sense of appreciation inside of you, think of three things in your life, big or small, that you really appreciate.

Forgiveness:

You don't need to focus on particular grudges you have. To access your headspace just repeat the following affirmation a few times internally with genuine and humble sincerity.  Try it now:

“I forgive everyone and I forgive myself for my own sake. I choose to let go of the silliness and resentment so I can live free of its burden.”

‘Congratulations - give yourself a ‘mini high five’

Take away

Forgiveness is not about making the other person right or condoning their behaviour. It is about releasing yourself from any distress or discomfort the situation is causing you.
